In the age of terrorism and rising resort to the use of technologically advanced, lethal weaponry in response to heightened conflict, whether armed or unarmed, mothers around the world increasingly fear the loss of their children, and, particularly, their sons, to armed violence. After the loss of a child to war, terrorism, community-based violence, police brutality or accident, what do bereaved mothers experience?  What do bereaved mothers have say to the growing number of mothers fearing the loss of their children, to the world?

At the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, on 12 August 2017, a white supremacist intentionally drives into a crowd of protesters, murdering 32-year-old Heather Heyer, and injuring many others. The means and methods of his hatred lead us to explore not only the state of the American South, but also the state of our Nation.

In 1955, before Rosa Parks, Claudette Colvin was the first African-American person arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated public bus to a white passenger, at age 15.  The historic court case to which Colvin became a party, Browder v. Gayle, was the case heard by the Supreme Court, putting an end to legally enforced segregation on public buses in the American South.
